Doctor Who: 6 Reasons The Sixth Doctor Is Usually Hated
3. The Special Effects Were Beyond Corny
This is not a knock on the Doctor Who special effects team mind you, who, for the most part, did a remarkable job with the budget they were given. However, the Sixth Doctor's tenure was a time that computer graphics were just starting to make their way onto the television, having been used in movies for the better part of the last decade. This is all well and good, of course, but the graphics that were used in Doctor Who at times looked as if they could have been drawn up by a graphic designer in elementary school. One story specifically, the Sixth Doctor's regeneration in Time and the Rani, started off with a computer generated TARDIS being attacked by the Rani. This scene looks nothing like the regular show at all, instead looking very cartoonish. It's not known why the BBC felt they should move away from the "mostly" realistic looking models they used at the time to use this "cartoon effect", but this episode's effects, along with those of other episodes during the Sixth Doctor's reign, take away from the stories at times. Thankfully, CGI has come a long way since then to become part of the NuWho experience, in moderation. However, most fans would agree that costumes and set designs bring a deeper emersion into the Whoverse than CGI ever will.
