Doctor Who: 6 Reasons Why It's Time For A Female Doctor

5. To Reflect Modern Gender/Sexual Identity Issues

It would be quite freeing for the audience and LGBTQ fans to see the show examine what it means and feels like going through a gender reassignment. This is a character with a male gender suddenly turning into a man after thousands of years. What would be the impact on her psychology? How would she embrace the change? Bringing back past characters could also lead to an exploration of the reactions some see in their lives when they undergo gender reassignment surgery.

Moreover, the Doctor with a different gender but the same sexual orientation, could be a real interesting combination full of rich character potential, especially if the companion was someone of homosexual orientation, like Bill Potts.

The Doctor has had plenty of romantic relationships in the TARDIS ever since the revival (Rose and River), so why not explore a different type of relationship. Part of the reason why science fiction is so popular is that it pushes boundaries, and Doctor Who is a series with a prime format to do such things in terms of gender and sexual identity. Torchwood saw popular success doing something similar and so here, it’s a tool that only has to be utilized by the writers.
