Doctor Who: 6 Reasons Why It's Time For A Female Doctor

1. Canon

Female Doctor Who
BBC

Finally, the most consequential reason for a female Doctor has been provided the canon in the most recent years. As previously referenced, the show has established Time Lords can change genders during regeneration already.

This started in a tongue-in-cheek manner during The Curse of the Fatal Death, but showrunner Steven Moffat has overseen the canon explanation for regeneration and gender.

In The Doctor’s Wife (which Moffat partly wrote), the Doctor jokes about how The Corsair regenerated into a woman. In The Night of the Doctor, Moffat shows that the Doctor has the choice to regenerate into a woman via the Sisterhood of Karn’s magic potions. And finally, of course, there is Missy who is a female incarnation of the Master.

Now that there is an in-continuity explanation for a Time Lord gender-swap, the BBC and upcoming showrunner Chris Chibnall have no canon excuse not to at least consider revealing a female lead.
