Doctor Who: 6 Reasons Why the 50th Anniversary Will Not Disappoint

5. John Hurt as The Doctor

John Hurt as The Doctor I don€™t care if John Hurt is playing the first incarnation of the Doctor, the ninth incarnation or the last; it€™s John Hurt! He€™s one of the best actors working in Britain today and to see him in Doctor Who, playing the title role, no less, is inspiring. To many, seeing an actor like John Hurt to take on the role of the Doctor is a dream come true. What we know is that he€™ll certainly bring gravitas to the role, and his superbly powerful voice. Hurt will have a big impact on the anniversary whoever he is portraying, which I can only see as a good thing. So what if he is playing a completely new character? This gives him a clean canvas to paint a memorable and iconic character on, solidified in the future for the 75th and 100th anniversaries. There are some who argue that John Hurt€™s appearance as the Doctor will completely skew the character of the Doctor; including the numbering system and having an impact of the Eighth and Ninth Doctors. Firstly, if this new incarnation does change the numbering system in any way; I believe this can only be seen as a good thing. It€™s the 50th year! We need a big change, something that will stick with the show forever to make this a landmark event. John Hurt€™s Doctor can be this landmark event. Secondly, it€™s a possibility that John Hurt€™s Doctor will have some impact of how we see or how the Eighth and Ninth Doctors are portrayed; but these are the two most underdeveloped on-screen Doctors to date, this would give them an opportunity to grow as personalities and for us, the fans, to see and learn something different about them, even if they don€™t appear. The introduction of John Hurt as the Doctor, I believe, can only be seen as a good thing, which will propel the anniversary to be a massive, landmark event. And just look, fans and non-fans alike continue to speculate, 2 months after The Name of the Doctor aired, as to who this new incarnation is.
