Doctor Who: 7 Reasons Series 7 Part 1 Happened In Reverse For The Doctor

5. A Town Called Mercy

During the previously mentioned spate of adventures post-Power of Three, the Doctor attempts a trip to Mexico but misses, ending up in the old west in Nevada. Here he encounters a cyborg gunslinger and a doctor of a very different kind to himself. The story of this particular episode isn't very important in the arc being explained, except for one scene and how the episode ends. The episode begins with a swift reference to the adventure they had during the slow invasion in Henry VIII's palace, in which Rory accidentally abandoned his phone charger. It's a small moment but it lends more credence to this theory. When the Doctor decides to allow the gunslinger to kill Kahler-Jex, his rage breaks at last and he screams at Amy that he resents his mercifulness, which has resulted in additional deaths in the past. Shades of Genesis of the Daleks work their way in as the Doctor contemplates his usual MO of peaceful resolution until there isn't another choice. Amy rebuffs his anger and resentment by coldly reminding him that he must not travel alone. The Doctor is struck extremely hard by this and his eyes glaze over. Whether he even heard her next sentence is hard to believe. He doesn't react with horror at what he's done or anger at her complete dismissal, he looks as though she stabbed him right in the heart. He regains his composure but he was unnaturally shaken by that line, unless he expects to be alone sometime soon. The episode ends with Amy and Rory's journey in the TARDIS ending and this would be their final stint of more than one adventure between visits home.
