Doctor Who: 7 Reasons Why Peter Davison Was The Best Doctor

3. "It's...My Fault..."

Snakedance (3) There is a rich and valuable discussion to be had over which is the better work - Snakedance, or Kinda. (I'm going to give away my own position on this divisive issue in about two more click, for the record) That said, there is one moment in Snakedance that crystalizes for me a lot of what I love about the Fith Doctor. having gone to find Dojjen, the former head of the planetary bureaucracy and current snakedancer with the express purpose of finding out the solution to the entire situation, the Doctor allows himself to be bitten by an unknown snake for the purpose of joining minds with him and learning the answer to the most important question in the universe. And as the Doctor attempts to control his mind and communicate, the most important thing in the universe is, 'Must save Tegan.... My fault.' Now, this is clearly not true. What has happened to Tegan is horrible, but it is in no way his fault. But nonetheless, to him, it is his fault. And it is the most important thing in the universe. If that doesn't define the Fifth Doctor, I don't know what does.
