1. Matt Smith In That Face
Everybody knows that Matt Smith was a footballer before he became a household name as the Eleventh Doctor but did you know that he also used to be a woman, too? Not literally, of course (seriously - let's not start that rumour!), but back in 2007 he did get the chance to explore his feminine side in his role as Henry in the critically acclaimed West End production of That Face. Matt got to tread the boards in a sparkling white dress (which, let's face it, is every young aspiring actor's dream) as he explored the confused and damaged life of his 18 year old character who began an incestuous relationship with his drug abusing mother Martha (not to be confused with the Doctor's former companion, played by Freema Agyeman - oh, what a different TARDIS dynamic that would've been!). His mother was actually played by Lindsey Duncan who would later guest star in the 2009 Doctor Who special The Waters of Mars as Adelaide Brooke, just in case she wasn't judging the Time Lord hard enough already. All Doctor Who connections aside, though, Matt's performance was critically acclaimed and even won him an Evening Standard award for Best Newcomer. Well deserved, too, because if donning red lipstick and hooping earrings isn't enough to affirm your versatility as an actor, what the hell is? What did you think of this list? Are there any other times the Doctors dressed up as a woman? Join the conversation in the comments section below.
