And it's about time, too! One of the most persistent criticisms aimed at
Doctor Who over recent years has been it's total lack of female creatives so you'll no doubt be trilled to hear that this is something else that's about to change for Series 9. Not only has Steven Moffat enlisted the scriptwriting services of
Torchwood writer Catherine Tregenna to pen an upcoming episode (the ominously titled
The Woman Who Lived), making her the first female
Doctor Who writer since 2008, but director Hettie MacDonald has also returned to helm the opening two-parter
The Magician's Apprentice and
The Witch's Familiar. It's a surprise it's taken Hettie so long to come back, actually, since her last contribution was Series 3's Hugo award-winning
Blink, but
Doctor Who fans know all too well that it's always better late than never. A "game-changing" development because the world has been waiting for
Doctor Who got with the times, so to speak. It's still a male dominated line up, of course, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.
