In the year 2005, Russell T Davies became a hero to Whovians around the world when he sucessfully revived the beloved classic sci-fi series Doctor Who after a decades-long hiatus.

The revival was a passion project for Davies, who had been a fan of the series since witnessing William Hartnell's First Doctor regenerate into Patrick Troughton's Second, and had been campaigning the BBC for Doctor Who's return since the late '80s.

As showrunner, Davies steered the revival, affectionately dubbed 'NuWho' by fans, through four full series, four specials, two Doctors, three companions, and the launching of two spin-offs, before stepping away from the main series at the end of 2009, passing the Tardis keys to Steven Moffat.

Now, it has been reported that Russell T Davies will be returning as Doctor Who showrunner in 2023, taking the reigns from Chris Chibnall, who will depart the show, along with Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker, in 2022.

Many Whovians believe that Davies, who will now steer Who through it's 60th anniversary special and the series that follows, will save the show after what they believe has been a low period.

To celebrate Russell T Davies return, lets take a look at his greatest contributions to the Whoniverse.

8. Journey's End

While Davies wrote a lot of great Doctor Who episodes, the series four finale, Journey's End, is easily one of the best.

With a story that saw the Tenth Doctor and all of his allies come together to battle Davros and the Daleks, the episode managed to wrap up not just series four's story, but the story of most of his companions as well. This left the Tenth Doctor free to go it alone in his final four specials.

When he later returns to bid farewell to his companions before his regeneration in The End of Time, there is nothing left to do but say goodbye. Everything else was resolved in Journey's End.

From the joy of the Doctor and his friends' victory over Davros, to his last goodbye with Rose, and finally, the glorious but tragically short reign of the Doctor-Donna, Journey's End will have you cheering one second, and crying the next.

It remains one of the greatest episodes of Davies' era as showrunner.
