Doctor Who and the movies have been intrinsically linked since the early years of the series. Despite there only being two official Doctor Who movies, in 1965 and 1966 respectively, rumours of movie projects have continued to dog the show. There was Tom Baker and Ian Marter's infamous Scratchman project, then the various mooted in-development projects while the series was off the air.

Michael Jackson was going to play the Doctor in a new movie, as were Donald Sutherland, Eric Idle, Denzel Washington and many, many more. One project was taken to market at the Cannes film festival, and Leonard Nimoy was attached to direct another. More recently, there were the rumours that Harry Potters' David Yates was developing a Doctor Who movie off the back of the series' huge popularity in the mid-2000s. And let's not even get started on that K9 movie...

None of these projects have come to anything, but as Disney and Marvel elbow their way into the cult TV market, can we expect Doctor Who to make the shift in the opposite direction? Whatever happens, you can guarantee that rumours of a Doctor Who film franchise will emerge again soon. Possibly even with Hugh Grant attached.
