Doctor Who: 8 Things We Know About The Next Three Episodes

6. The Caretaker Will Primarily Be A Character Story

Clara: €œThis school is in danger.€ The Doctor: €œLucky I€™m here then.€ Clara: €œFrom you€ You wouldn€™t be here if there wasn€™t an alien threat nearby. Your strategy for dealing with it involves endangering this school.€ The Doctor: €œYou don€™t know that.€ Clara: €œI don€™t know anything €“ because you haven€™t told me anything. Which means I wouldn€™t approve. Which means you€™re endangering this school.€ €“ Clara and The Doctor, The Caretaker
Although there is a tangible threat at the heart of The Caretaker, the main focus is on the characters rather than the alien threat. CultBox€™s spoiler-free review of the episode describes the Skovox Blitzer as €œlittle more than a Christmas toy to be€ and notes that it €œjust wanders around pew-pewing everything that crops up in its Predator vision€. While that€™s not the best review of the episode€™s villain of the week, it€™s not particularly damning either and shows us that (in another strong comparison to The Lodger), the villain is taking a backseat this time around. Which might just be the best move possible since it allows more focus on the interplay between the characters and for Roberts and Moffat to concentrate on the more sitcom-esque elements. Areas in which they both thrive as writers.
