Doctor Who: All 40 Steven Moffat Episodes Ranked From Worst To Best

We've all been slapped too many times in the face with regeneration red herrings. However the teaser at the start shouldn't really be added to the stockpile; rather, it works well as a crafty piece of misdirection by Moffat that's in keeping with the rest of the story's thrilling twists and turns.

Once again, the "WOW!" on Bill's jacket sums up the graphically godawful hole in her chest, and also the harrowing realisation that she's been fully converted into a Cyberman. Master, you cruel b*****d, welcome back.

There are some playful hints as to the real identity of "Mr Razor", most notably the Master's signature tune. Oh, how we've missed those drums. Even without the inevitable leak of John Simm’s feted return, you still could have worked out before the "surprise" reveal anyway as he has a discernible tone of voice.

A rocket-fuelled start is followed by an andante eeriness. Someone continuously sounding the word "pain pain" is disturbing enough, but then it's horrifyingly amplified when the unbearable cries of pain can be lowered via volume controls.

The special FX look impressively big-budget; from the breathtaking Mondasian colony ship, to the mesmerising black hole, to the who-needs-dystopia-when-you've-got-Floor-1056?

Capaldi, Gomez and Simm simply sparkle throughout, especially when the Doctor makes an impassioned plea to them to stay and fight out of simple kindness. We're glued to their frenemy face-off; we see Missy clearly conflicted and wonder whether the Doctor can convince the stony-faced Master.

As for the ending? Just sit back and enjoy this doozy of a cliffhanger.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
