35. The Return Of Doctor Mysterio
Now this has the ultimate geek-out premise. The Doctor plus a superhero who does his best impression of an all-American Clark Kent. And to add to the geek effect, this article was written in a room with posters of both Marvel and DC superheroes emblazoned on all four walls, as typified in Grant Gordon's bedroom (yes, believe it or not, you can like them both).
Capaldi carries on from where he left off in The Husbands of River Song by showcasing his effortless comedic flair. Moffat riffs on plenty of superhero movie themes and moments - the one for the adults X-ray vision gag is brilliantly done.
But like in plenty of superhero movies, the main villains are underwhelming. Well, if you can call an alien race that's able to graphically dislodge part of their head as "underwhelming".
The Twelfth Doctor has given us some epic monologues throughout his lifetime, and he delivers yet another gem of enlightenment here: "Things end. That's all. Everything ends, and it's always sad. But everything begins again too, and that's always happy. Be happy."
