Doctor Who: Best Episode Of Every Series
12. Series 2: Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday
Honourable Mentions: School Reunion, The Girl In The Fireplace, The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
If you didn’t cry during the final scene of the Series 2 finale, then you must have had your emotions removed, Cybermen-style.
While this is probably the weakest of Davies’ series, it remains pretty popular, largely because of the chemistry between David Tennant and Billie Piper. Which is what makes their permanent (or so we thought) separation so devastating, as we are forced to watch the Tenth Doctor and Rose say goodbye in heart-breaking fashion.
Beyond the emotional farewell, the rest of the two-parter completely rules. Army Of Ghosts draws us in with a thrilling plot surrounding the heavily teased Torchwood institute, before unveiling the return of not only the Cybermen but also the Daleks.
Doomsday delivers on all the set-up, pitting the two most iconic Who baddies against each other and it’s just awesome. Everyone’s inner fan-boy simply explodes with joy at the sight of the two of them doing battle. Or should I say pest control?
Throw in Micky Smith, Jackie and Pete Tyler saying their goodbyes, the parallel Earth storyline coming to a close, the first appearance of the Cult of Skaro and Freema Agyeman and even some Brexit foreshadowing (no seriously it’s in there). All in all, this is a story that’s endlessly re-watchable and enjoyable.
Plenty of action, high-stakes, comedy and raw emotion, make this is a proper blockbuster finale. Arguably the best of the revival era.
