Doctor Who: Best Episode Of Every Series
11. Series 3: Blink
Honourable Mentions: Smith And Jones, The Shakespeare Code, Human Nature/The Family Of Blood
Probably the most obvious entry on this list, Blink is hands down the best Doctor Who episode ever. Even if the Doctor is hardly in it.
Penned by Steven Moffat, the episode centres around Sally Sparrow, played excellently by Carey Mulligan, as she encounters the terrifying Weeping Angels.
Unquestionably the best and scariest NuWho monster so far, the design of the Angels, creatures that can only move when they’re not being observed, is so brilliant and utterly, utterly disturbing. It takes a villain quite special to be considered on the same level as the Daleks, Cyberman and The Master, but thanks to this episode alone the Angels are. The less said about some of their subsequent appearances, the better.
The absence of both the Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones is barely felt at all, and when they do make their cameo, via DVD extras, the genius of Moffat’s script becomes evident. Their back-and-forth with Sally and Larry Nightingale, is simply wonderful to watch.
Directed to perfection by Hettie Macdonald, who also directed Series 9’s The Magician’s Apprentice/The Witch’s Familiar, the final act with the Angels closing in, is jaw-dropping, one of the greatest in the show’s long history.
As smart as it is scary, 13 years on this incredible episode still has us hiding behind the sofa in fear.
Don’t blink.
