Doctor Who: Best Episode Of Every Series

9. 2009 Specials: The Waters Of Mars

While they were never called a series, the 2009 Specials, aka the David Tennant farewell tour, technically were one. Besides, including them means everyone can once again appreciate one of the best revival episodes.

In his penultimate story, the Tenth Doctor visits the first human colony on Mars, on the eve of a disaster that is a fixed-point in history and the last Time Lord must decide whether or not to intervene.

Throughout Ten’s tenure, he was nicknamed the Lonely God and this episode better than any other before it showcases the moral dilemma that comes with such a title. It is heart-breaking to watch Tennant (superb as usual) pained with the weight of knowledge that those around him, people he would usually attempt to save, are destined to die instead.

In addition, Lindsay Duncan puts in a powerhouse performance to make Adelaide Brooke a stellar one-off companion. The Flood zombies are very creepy and intelligent villains, a perfect example of how the show is able to make something as commonplace as water, completely threatening.

The conclusion with Brooke's suicide is devastating and poignant. Time Lord victorious is wrong.

Planet Of The Dead was enjoyable yet forgettable, while The End Of Time was emotional yet heavily flawed. The Waters Of Mars on the other hand, is just perfect.
