Doctor Who: Best Episode Of Every Series

10. Series 4: Midnight

The Lost Dimension Doctor Who
BBC

Honourable Mentions: Planet Of The Ood, Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead, Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End

Unquestionably the greatest series of the revival era, Series 4 is jam-packed full of incredible episodes. Nearly all of them are worthy of taking the mantle of best of the series.

While the monumental three-part finale and the yet-again brilliant Moffat episodes came close to being included in this list, it’s Midnight that comes out on top this time.

Even though Donna Noble, the greatest companion ever, has virtually no screen time, the Russell T. Davies written episode is still very entertaining, despite also being very dark. Set almost entirely within a tourist bus on a planet made of diamonds, the Tenth Doctor is terrorised by an unseen assailant, who possesses one of the passengers and subsequently begins to mimic everyone onboard.

It is one of the creepiest and most unsettling episodes the show has ever produced. Much like with the Weeping Angels in Blink, the simplicity and lack of information on the primary antagonist, makes it all the more terrifying.

It’s one of the only times that we see the Doctor truly petrified, with Tennant putting in one of his best ever performances. Lesley Sharp playing the possessed Skye is amazing throughout, as is the rest of the small cast, that also includes David Troughton, son of Patrick Troughton who of course played the Second Doctor.

It may not stand out as much as other episodes on this list, but Midnight certainly deserves to.
