Doctor Who: Boom Review - 9 Ups & 3 Downs
3. UP - Moffat Not Pulling His Punches
Moffat has been away for a few years, and he's come back with stuff to say. This is a very angry script that doesn't hold back, and that's the kind of script we like.
That's not to say that taking a dig at capitalism in Doctor Who is new ground, but it has so much bark coming out of Ncuti Gatwa's mouth. This one has venom behind it, and doesn't feel like posturing solely for brownie points – in fact, the episode actively rallies against this kind of virtue-signalling behaviour with its recurring 'Thoughts & Prayers' motif.
Boom also takes aim at religion in a number of ways, including Fifteen's particularly cutting comment regarding the Church being an army. This is a Doctor that has some things to say about the state of the world, and who will actually back these opinions up with actions – a side of the Doctor that has been dormant for some time.
We're past the point where this show should be trying to play both sides, and it's refreshing to get some politics with a bit of bite, rather than the half-committals and easy wins we've seen in recent years.
