Doctor Who: Boom Review - 9 Ups & 3 Downs
2. DOWN - An Unsatisfying Resolution
We're starting to get deja-vu putting plot resolutions as a down. What is it with this show and struggling to wrap up a story?
This week wasn't the worst on record for this. Weaponising the AI reconstruction against the algorithm is at least serviceable as a plan, even if this is a 'power of love' ending once again (honestly, it's one James Corden-sized Cyberman suit away from Closing Time). The issue here comes from the fact that this isn't even the Doctor's plan – he just sends the AI into the cloud to dig for proof and the whole fighting the algorithm thing is one big, happy accident.
The episode also does a rather strange fake-out where it reveals John has sabotaged the Villengard AI, only for him to be deleted, only for him to then pop-up again thirty seconds later for a second time and save the day. Why? Just have it work the first time and delay the reveal – this back and forth added nothing.
We'd almost get rid of this Down on account of Ncuti's Dad power speech, which we did like. Almost, but not quite.
