Doctor Who: Eve Of The Daleks Review - 9 Ups & 4 Downs

12. UP - A Great Concept

Doctor Who Eve of the Daleks
BBC

We love it when Doctor Who, a show with a central premise of time travel, actually plays around with time travel as anything other than a means of getting from A to B. Seriously, this happens way less often then you’d think. Despite the fact that a time loop isn’t exactly the most original sci-fi concept, it hasn’t really been done in NuWho, unless you count Heaven Sent, where it is applied very differently as more of a backdrop to a character piece focusing on Twelve’s cycle of grief.

Here, the time loop is the central focus of the episode, and rather than having each loop play out exactly the same, we have our cast learning from each loop and applying this knowledge to adjust their strategy in the next loop, each time coming closer and closer to escaping. This is a brilliant concept, and feels like fresh ground for the show, and both the setting and villains of the piece are a great fit for this claustrophobic vibe.

This episode felt very Moffat, in the best way.
