Doctor Who: Eve Of The Daleks Review - 9 Ups & 4 Downs

11. UP - Sarah And (To A Lesser Extent) Nick

Doctor Who Eve of the Daleks
BBC

The clear standout star of this week is Sarah, brought to life by the charming and hilarious Aisling Bea, who, let’s be honest, is basically playing herself here. Instantly likeable and also refreshingly self-aware, Sarah is both the emotional heart and comic relief this week, and Aisling Bea excels at both. Honestly, we’d take her as a Donna-esque companion.

We also have Nick, portrayed by Adjani Salmon. Nick is a bit of an oddball, with some very questionable habits, but the episode makes it difficult to dislike him, setting him up as a quirky, awkward but somewhat endearing bloke with a good heart. As the episode tells us, that’s the most important thing, really.

Having just these two guest stars really let’s us get to know them, and as a result, they feel fleshed-out if flawed by the end of the episode - some of Chibnall’s better side characters, by some margin.

Alex is a sci-fi and fantasy swot, and is a writer for WhoCulture. He is incapable of watching TV without reciting trivia, and sometimes, when his heart is in the right place, and the stars are too, he’s worth listening to.
