Doctor Who: Eve Of The Daleks Review - 9 Ups & 4 Downs

8. UP - Flux Fallout

Doctor Who Eve of the Daleks
BBC

We were slightly concerned that the Flux, which had cataclysmic repercussions for the Whoniverse, would disappear into the rearview mirror, never to be discussed again. Thankfully, some of the loose plot threads from the series are picked up here.

The Fluxing up of the TARDIS is something that we all assumed had been forgotten at the end of the series, but, to Chibnall’s credit, it is acknowledged here immediately. In fact, the clear out of the Flux debris from the TARDIS is what causes the time loop in the first place. Why? It’s Doctor Who, just accept it.

We also get the Doctor’s casual triple-genocide from The Vanquishers rightfully coming back to bite her on the arse. The whole reason The Daleks have sent a hit-squad after her is because of her allowing the Sontarans to wipe out the Dalek fleet, and as much as Thirteen wants to protest that this wasn’t her fault, it was very un-Doctor-like to condone mass murder on this scale and it’s nice to see some consequences for these actions.

As for the small matter of most of the universe being destroyed, this was not acknowledged, so I think we’re safe to assume that either Chibnall didn’t realise that he’d destroyed it or communicated the scale of the destruction poorly. Going forward, we’ll have to accept that maybe the universe is back to normal - come up with your own headcanon.
