Doctor Who: Eve Of The Daleks Review - 9 Ups & 4 Downs

5. UP - They Finally Let Yaz Admit It

Doctor Who Eve of the Daleks
BBC

We’d begun to think that this long-seeded sub plot was never going to be acknowledged in any concrete way. We’re pleased to say that we were wrong. This episode, at long last, has Yaz admit to Dan that she has romantic feelings for the Doctor, and is struggling with how to handle them. She is concerned (and rightfully so) that The Doctor won’t reciprocate her love, and things will get all awks in the TARDIS.

Cue Dan, bold as brass, immediately outing Yaz’s feelings and sexuality to the Doctor in a brazen move that could easily have repercussions for the pair. This is probably a dick move, but we’ve been watching Yaz fawn for so long that we’re in full support of Dan finally doing something about it this episode. The Doctor seems flustered about this and shrugs it off, seemingly justifying Yaz’s concerns. We’ll see what happens, but given Whittaker only has two episodes left, we don’t think this is going to end well…

Personally, we aren’t big on the Doctor being romantically entangled with companions (except River, anyway), and Thirteen having feelings for Yaz would be a little out of the blue from what we’ve seen, but whether you are rooting for ‘Thasmin’ or not, it’s poor writing to set up something like this solely for representation and never pay it off properly, so the show gets an up here for finally grabbing the bull by the horns.
