Doctor Who: Every 11th Doctor Episode Ranked Worse To Best

9. A Good Man Goes To War

Doctor Who Matt Smith
BBC

Ever since her first appearance in Silence in the Library, River Song’s identity has been a mystery for many to speculate over. Was she the Doctor’s wife? A fellow Time Lord? The Rani? (The latter is a reference for the classic Doctor Who fans. You're welcome).

While in retrospect the reveal that she is the daughter of two of the Doctor's companions may not be a big deal in the Time Lord's legacy, it was still a big shock for the audience. For many this episode will be defined by this big reveal, but it is an incredibly well structured and memorable story otherwise. From Rory the Roman’s dramatic entrance as he blows up several Cybermen spaceships without so much as blinking to the finale when the Pasternoster Gang battle the creepy Headless Monks, this episode is epic.

Perhaps one of the most rewatchable episodes of Matt Smith’s era, A Good Man Goes To War boasts epic moments but also remembers to make time for the smaller moments too. RIP Lorna Bucket.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
