Doctor Who: Every NuWho Cyberman Story Ranked Worst To Best
8. Nightmare In Silver
Author Neil Gaiman was already a household name in the world of science-fiction and fantasy thanks to critically lauded novels such as American Gods and Good Omens, among many others. And after the success of his first Doctor Who story, The Doctor's Wife, audiences were beyond excited to see what else he had in store. Unfortunately Nightmare in Silver proved to be a letdown.
In the episode the Eleventh Doctor takes Clara and her nanny charges, Angie and Artie, to a theme park on an alien planet, where an army of, surprise surprise, Cybermen are reawakening.
Gaiman has stated that the final product ended up being much different to the story that he had originally planned, which goes a long way to explain why the episode is rushed and crammed with decent ideas that are never fully realised, much like the rest of Series 7.
The concept of ever-upgrading Cybermen is pretty neat but it ends up making them near-invincible and therefore pretty dull. Plus this story, more than any other on this list, makes the Cybermen feel more like robots than cyborgs and yes, there is a significant difference between the two.The legend that is Warwick Davis gets to shine as Porridge, but the other notable guest stars, most notably Jason Watkins and Tamzin Outhwaite, are criminally under-utilised. And as for Angie and Archie, well the less said about them the better.
But it's not all bad. Matt Smith in the dual role of The Doctor and the Cyber Planner is riveting, and the direction and visuals of his scenes are very well done. Not enough to redeem the whole episode unfortunately, but entertaining nonetheless.
