There's only so much the Family can do in the form of green gas clouds, especially with their lifespans dwindling. So to get around they consume four people: Baines (Son), Mr Clark (Father), Jenny (Mother), and Lucy Cartwright (Daughter) and use them as vehicles to hunt down the Doctor - who's hidden himself in an English village in 1913 as a human called John Smith - and inhale the Time Lord's true essence, which is kept inside his fob watch, that will sustain the Family for eons.

Like the pig slaves where Martha conscientiously acknowledges the fact they were people who had been killed, Martha touches upon the de facto killing of Jenny, reminding us how the Family cruelly took her and the others from their own families. They got what they desired in the end from the Time Lord, but not in the way they wanted.

With ice-cold fury, the Doctor wrapped Father in unbreakable chains, forged in the heart of a dwarf star; tricked Mother into the event horizon of a collapsing galaxy, imprisoning her forever; trapped Daughter inside a mirror. Every mirror; and suspended Son in perpetual time as a scarecrow, no less.
