Doctor Who: Every Penultimate Cliffhanger Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
8. Dark Water
Steven Moffat loves Cybermen. He did a lot of stories which featured them. So by the time he broke Peter Capaldi in for his first season, the revelation that the Cybermen were set to invade Earth once again was a bit of a duff anticlimax.
Another particular frustrating point of this story arc was, in the following episode, they made reference to the original Cybermen invasion of the classic Patrick Troughton series but not the most recent and glaringly global invasion seen in Army of Ghosts and Doomsday.
Fortunately, the final episode, Death in Heaven made good on this arc and pulled out some riveting drama, so all was forgiven in the long run. Dark water also ended on the reveal that the dubious but wonderfully charismatic Missy was actually the Master in a whole new guise. So, extra points for that one. The look on the 12th Doctor's face is priceless, and Michelle Gomez was exemplery in the role.
