Doctor Who: Every Penultimate Cliffhanger Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
7. The End Of Time: Part 1
David Tennant's iconic swansong to Doctor Who was an epic all-outer which was just about the most dramatic story in the franchise so far. The End of Time began on Christmas and ended on New-Year's Day. And the cliffhanger in between was comprised of two separate bombshells.
This first was that The Master had made his comeback and had managed to copy himself onto every living person on planet Earth. The second was that the Time Lords had returned under the banner of Rassilon and had declared their maniacal intentions to put an end to time itself.
The Time Lord empire was a cool addition because it was the last box Russel T Davies had to tick in his revival of all the classic Doctor Who conventions. Unfortunately, The Master copy arc was a little unoriginal. Though a clever concept on paper, The Master ended up coming across as a kind of Agent Smith on a BBC budget. So this cliffhanger was really a game of two halves, but it did set the stage for The End of Time: Part 2, which was one of the most heart-rendering finales in Doctor Who history.
