Doctor Who: Every River Song Episode Ranked Worst To Best

9. Let’s Kill Hitler

Doctor Who River Song
BBC

This was the next chapter in the mid-series bombshell-dropping story arc, where the long running enigma of River Song began to swiftly unravel. In that vein, we can consider Let's Kill Hitler River's origin story. It's an essential episode, but by no means the best.

Turns out that a much younger River had been living alongside her identically-aged parents, Amy and Rory, since childhood. She regenerated into the River we know and love after attempting to assassinate Hitler, and then went on to try and kill The Doctor himself. She succeeded, changed her tune entirely, and then brought him back to life, exhausting all of her own regenerations in the process.

This episode fills in a seismic gap of the history of River. It explained how she came to be, and her first romantic point of contact with the Doctor. So in terms of content, it was a good episode, if a little silly. Having covered this segment once and for all, the River Song narrative was able to continue in a linear and less confusing manner for future stories, which if nothing else, was a relief.
