Doctor Who: Every River Song Episode Ranked Worst To Best

8. A Good Man Goes To War

Doctor Who River Song
BBC

This was a great episode, but it didn't feature much of River Song... Not exactly anyway.

Instead, the story followed The Doctor's all out assault on the perpetrators involved in Amy Pond's capture and it's no exaggeration to say that he goes hell for leather. Some of his most fearsome allies from previous eps chipped in to help him bust his companion free.

River's eventual appearance in the final act brings with it the mother of all bombshells. Turns out that Amy's squeaky bundle of joy, aptly named 'Melody', is in fact River in her newborn form, albeit a flesh copy.

Song's involvement was minuscule but integral to this episode, and the overall revelation brought some well needed closure to the mythology of both River and Amy. Ironically, the River as we knew and loved her needed to do very little to contribute to this part of her story. Even though the episode was huge in every other respect, it did little for her actual character, which had stolen the spotlight so many times in previous episodes.
