Doctor Who: Every Series Plot Thread Ranked Worst To Best

7. The Impossible Girl

River Song Doctor Who

We met Clara Oswald a long time before we met Clara Oswald.

First time round, she was as a residing consciousness trapped inside a Dalek. Next, she was a well mannered Victorian lady. It was always a different character, and that character was always ill-fated. So began another head bending mystery, involving an assistant more personal to the Doctor than any other.

On her eventual introduction, it seemed as though Clara Oswald was as normal as any other companion. It wasn't until the end of that series that we got the big reveal. In order to counter some time travelling mischief from The Great Intelligence, Clara sent herself, sprawling through the past, acting as an everlasting guardian for The Doctor throughout all of his previous regenerations.

The implications of this was massive. She had been with the Doctor all along, and that was an unparalleled addition to the existing Doctor Who cannon. It was a great mystery with nothing short of an epic payoff. All boxes ticked then, even if not many people talk about the thread today.
