Doctor Who: Every Series Plot Thread Ranked Worst To Best

8. The Oldest Question In The Universe

River Song Doctor Who
BBC

The above is the short version. The full version is "The first question, the oldest question in the universe, hidden in plain sight."

Tag that on with the "Silence will fall" mystery that ran parallel, and you get one of the sneakiest threads in history. "The oldest question in the universe, hidden in plain sight" is not just a deep slice into Doctor Who lore but a fourth wall-breaking jab at the audiences, particularly when you think about the latter part of that riddle. The question in, er, question, is the name of the show itself; "Doctor Who".

This riddle resurfaced at the end of Matt Smith's tenure when the stakes where higher than they had ever been before, and we almost found out the answer to that question, but alas, the reveal was averted.

Keep in mind that we still don't know The Doctor's name, so technically, this thread is still alive and kicking, albeit in stasis. Although it's universally accepted that we are better off not knowing the answer. Let's hope it stays that way for pretty much ever.
