Doctor Who: Every Tenth Doctor Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

17. Gridlock

Doctor Who The End of Time
BBC Studios

Gridlock is one of those episodes that never gets the love it deserves. When you go back and rewatch it, you realise that it's much stronger than you probably remembered.

The premise of the Tenth Doctor and Martha being stuck in a traffic jam might sound dull, but it's actually super fascinating to see the levels to which New Earth has fallen, and there are loads of fun side characters thrown in along the way, plus a very emotional ending involving the Face of Boe that sets up an all-timer twist later in the series.

There's also the scene where all the passengers, stuck on this gridlocked road from hell, all pause and sing Abide With Me, which is a beautiful and understated moment in a show full of aliens and time travel.

Gridlock does have a very one-dimensional baddie in the form of the Macra, which could've been abandoned altogether in favour of focusing on the tension and claustrophobia of the highway itself. But that's our only nitpick.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
