What if the Doctor was human? Human Nature/The Family of Blood uses this simple yet intriguing premise to deliver a masterclass in sci-fi telly.

While we've seen the Tenth Doctor fall in love before (Madame de Pompadour and Rose), never have we seen him wanting a life where he can settle down and start a family. Through his love of Joan Redfern, we see this yearning - quite literally too, with an imagined flash-forward where he lives out his days and dies as a human with his wife alongside him.

It also helps that the monsters are genuinely terrifying too, whether that be the scarecrows or the Family of Blood, which is led by the sinister Son of Mine (Harry Lloyd, giving John Simm a run for his money as one of the best villain performances in the Tenth Doctor's era).

This two-parter showed that Doctor Who can be an emotional and dark drama as well as a pure sci-fi show. Its grounded setting and lack of alien-ness are both hugely refreshing, further broadening the scope of Doctor Who while offering up a fascinating dissection of the title character.
