Doctor Who: Every Tenth Doctor Episode Ranked From Worst To Best
5. Midnight
Midnight is unique in its visible lack of a big alien baddie, with the villain instead being... us.
The fear is psychological, as an unknown entity takes control of several characters on a broken-down shuttle bus on the planet Midnight. This was a difficult episode to pull off, because you're relying purely on the strength of the acting and the dialogue without any of the usual whizz-bang fireworks Doctor Who can usually fall back on. And yet, Midnight succeeds with flying colours.
The idea of the creature repeating back the passengers' words is an awesome hook. You wouldn't think it'd be as riveting as it actually is, but there's something deeply unsettling about it, almost like it's an invasion of privacy.
And stripping the Doctor of his most powerful tool - his words - puts the character in a position we've never seen them in before, and we come to realise just how much they rely on their diplomacy, and how bad things can get when that's no longer an option.
Just think about it: the Doctor would've died here if the hostess hadn't intervened. There's no two ways about it. And that makes Midnight an incredibly powerful story.
