Doctor Who: Every Title Sequence Ranked From Worst To Best
9. The Eighth Doctor (1996)
The Pertwee era logo is back, so the 1996 TV Movie already has a few brownie points in my book. Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor's feature length outing began with an extremely rare (for the time) cold open, and proceeded into arguably the first 'modern' title sequence. These visuals almost perfectly bridge the gap between Classic and 'Nu' Who, featuring a vortex with discernible depth, and text flying throughout (similar to what we saw from 2005 onwards), to rocks hurtling through space, and a large, three-dimensional logo (similar to Sylvester McCoy's opening).
The theme music itself was arranged by American composer John Debney, who gave the usually electronically produced theme a fully orchestral flair - something we would become very used to for the majority of NuWho. The Eighth Doctor's titles were beautifully simple, yet produced with stunning detail. For a hopeful reboot (which of course didn't happen), they went all-out on this opening sequence. Though the movie itself didn't stick the landing, this opening sure did.
