Doctor Who Flux: The Halloween Apocalypse Review - 6 Ups & 3 Downs

3. The Sontarans Are A Perfect Mix Of Old And New

Okay, hands up: who was shocked by just how ugly this particular Sontaran was when he first popped off his helmet? Not that Sontarans usually have model good looks or anything, but these guys' heads look like actual turds. They make Strax look like a cast member from Baywatch.

Anyway, we really love the design - both with and without the helmet - and it's also good to see that the Sontarans have retained the humour that was really brought to the fore in the Moffat era, with the aforementioned Strax (their "you look disgusting" banter in this introductory scene was golden).

This is a hotly-debated topic, but if you ask us, the Sontarans are just better when they're funny. They're stumpy little potato men with bald, round heads, but at the same time, they're bloodthirsty and battle-hardened - in other words, they're utterly ridiculous monsters, so it only makes sense to run with the gag.

A more classic design with NuWho humour is also a good way to please old and new fans. We'll have to wait until next week's episode to see how these Sontarans truly fare with the fanbase though.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
