Doctor Who Flux: The Halloween Apocalypse Review - 6 Ups & 3 Downs

4. Don't Blink

Doctor Who The Halloween Apocalypse Weeping Angel
BBC

Normally, it's Doctor Who's writers/showrunners that get all the credit, but here, we have to give huge props to director Jamie Magnus Stone. That shot of the Angel reflected in Claire's eye? That was a truly nifty callback to the "Angel in Amy's eye" shots from Flesh And Stone. Nicely done sir.

Jumping back to the start of this scene though, and you could just feel the atmosphere turn cold when Claire first spotted that Angel on the street. The bluish lighting, the hint of smoke drifting through the air, the fact that there were no other signs of life in the area, no other sounds... it was chilling. It truly felt like Claire was doomed - like the Angel was inevitable.

Overall, it was great to see a return to the horror of Blink. Weeping Angel scenes are at their best when it's a one-on-one encounter - after all, they are known as "Lonely Assassins".

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
