Sea Devils wield lightsabers in the epic new trailer for Doctor Who's Easter special.

With so much rumour and gossip dominating the Doctor Who news cycle recently (we're looking at you, Hugh Grant and Danny Dyer), it's been easy to forget that Easter special Legend of the Sea Devils is approaching rather rapidly.

In fact, it's out in just two weeks, and though you'd expect a main trailer to drop a little bit further out than that, the BBC has only just decided to release it into the wild.

Though not quite as impressive as the main trailer that preceded Series 13: Flux, this Legend of the Sea Devils trailer still hits the mark, despite only being a minute long. It gives us plenty of pirates, swashbuckling, some blockbuster-level special effects, and a few good glimpses of that fantastic Sea Devil redesign. Seriously, they look amazing - fezzes off to everyone involved.

There's quite a lot to unpack, so let's pick out some of the most interesting talking points and break 'em down! Before we dive in though, the trailer wasn't the only new bit of marketing released this weekend - there's one other thing worth mentioning...

13. New Promo Images

Along with the trailer, the BBC also dropped some new stills from the episode on the official Doctor Who Twitter account (check out the tweet below).

Most of these are similar to shots we see in the trailer so there isn't really anything to say about them, although one particular image - showing Madame Ching holding Dan and Yaz at sword-point, while the Doctor anxiously checks her sonic screwdriver and a corpse rests in the background - is fairly interesting.

Whether this is a conflict that kicks off the episode or brings it to a close, we now know that the whole thing won't take place at sea, which should help Legend of the Sea Devils feel grander in scope - unlike the previous special, Eve of the Daleks.

Eve of the Daleks attempted to use tight COVID restrictions to its advantage by employing a time loop in a single environment, and though certainly an admirable effort, the episode still felt quite cheap and unremarkable.

Based on the footage and stills we've seen thus far, Legend of the Sea Devils looks to have avoided that problem - it feels expensive and epic, and hopefully that's exactly how the finished product comes across.
