3. Lindsay Duncan
Doctor Who fans were left disheartened back in 2009 when it was revealed that the show would be going on a temporary break to coincide with the cast and crew overhaul that was taking place behind the scenes. Their spirits were lifted somewhat, however, with the accompanying announcement that they'd still be getting four specials to make the gap year slightly more bearable. Whether or not the subsequent offerings were actually special is open to viewer interpretation, but the second one, The Waters of Mars, played host to screen veteran Lindsay Duncan who the show enlisted as their latest 'companion of the week', Captain Adelaide Brooke. Suffice to say, she wasted no time in establishing herself as a formidable on screen force to be reckoned with and she even gave David Tennant a run for his money which is no mean feat. With an extensive career spanning over five decades, it's not like Lindsay particularly needs any introduction. She's a British icon of the stage and screen with two Oliver awards and a Tony award to her name and she was given an OBE in 2009 for her services to drama. In 2011 she shared the small screen with Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith in Christopher and His Kind (after treading the boards with him in the critically acclaimed 2007 production of That Face) and, most recently, she played Tabitha Dickinson, a New York Times theatre critic, in the award-winning Birdman which won the prestigious title of Best Picture at this year's Oscars.
