Doctor Who: Ranking New Who Finales From Worst To Best
11. Dark Water/Death In Heaven
Peter Capaldi's debut series was going rather well. It had a few slip ups towards the end (cough, cough, In the Forest of the Night). But, overall, it was a solid run, and his darker Doctor was well established, with some deepening moments of character development, particularly his tense relationship with Clara. Sadly, this all came crashing down come Dark Waters.
Steven Moffat neatly set things into motion, and had some riveting sequences surrounding Clara's grief over Danny's death, and how far the Twelfth Doctor would go for her, despite her attempts at betrayal. Dark Waters is by and large a fantastic experience, but it's let down greatly by Death in Heaven, which chucks away all the great elements previously set up, and becomes a bore-fest due to nothing really happening.
The whole concept of the Cybermen being created from the dead was actually spine-tingling, and incredibly ballsy on the part of Steven Moffat. But they mostly just stand around a graveyard and do nothing, becoming a sheer mockery when Missy gets them to twirl around for her own amusement later on. Speaking of Missy. Her reveal as The Master came out of nowhere, and her characterisation was completely off, feeling more like an evil River Song than The Doctor's arch nemesis. So much is wasted in this finale, and the overall endgame was just pathetic, and downright questionable.
