Doctor Who: Ranking The Christmas Specials

Which Doctor Who Christmas specials get us in the festive spirit best?

There are a few things that Christmas Day simply can't be without: good company, copious amounts of turkey, a drunken uncle ranting to himself, and, of course, the annual Doctor Who special. Often heart-warming and sometimes heart-breaking, these specials almost always leave a mark, for better or for worse.

In this bumper-size list, I will be ranking every single Christmas special from worst to best. Resolution is not included as it aired on New Year's Day and does not include any festive elements - though I don't blame The Doctor for dodging the holiday season for once. He/she does have a nasty habit of dying on Christmas Day (three times in a row, in fact). Tough break...

Wrap up warm and hold onto your stockings, we're taking the long way round on this one...

13. The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe

Be it for good or bad reasons, The Doctor Who Christmas Special is always eventful, except that one time it wasn't.

The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe takes the bottom spot on this list by some margin due the fact it is, in two words, completely forgettable (in fact, it scored second place in our recent list: 10 Doctor Who Episodes You Completely Forgot Existed, and for good reason).

This dry, unimaginative hour of television finds an uncharacteristically annoying Eleventh Doctor trying to save two (also quite annoying) children from a Narnia rip-off before it is destroyed by Bill Bailey and a cloud of acid rain. A problem which, we might add, is caused by the Doctor being a irresponsible carer.

Surprisingly little happens during this episode, even with its extended runtime. The resolution feels flat and the supporting cast fail to connect with the audience in any meaningful way. It was perhaps an early indicator of the dip in quality we'd see in Series 7...
