Doctor Who: Ranking The Doctor's Sonic Screwdrivers Worst To Best

2. The Ninth And Tenth Doctors' Sonic Screwdriver

The first sonic screwdriver of the revival series, this was the version of the famous sci-fi device new and old fans were introduced to in the Ninth Doctor's debut episode in 2005.

More compact and streamlined than its classic predecessors, this was a futuristic, multi-functional and impressive design which matched the then-TARDIS interior. With a cracked coral texture enclosing intricate technology, and an extendable glass tube topped with a glowing blue diode, this screwdriver was too cool for only one Time Lord to use.

Kept by his Tenth incarnation post-regeneration, the Doctor used this screwdriver in his many adventures - including battles with the Cybermen and Daleks. It was accidentally destroyed in 2007's Smith and Jones - burnt-out by an X-Ray machine - but was replaced with an updated model shortly after.

It was also the first sonic screwdriver on-screen which was said to be useless against wood. An updated model of the Tenth Doctor's screwdriver, which included a red mode, dampers and a hidden neural relay, was given to River Song by the Twelfth Doctor as a parting gift.

The final time that the Tenth Doctor's sonic was seen in use was by the newly-regenerated Eleventh Doctor in The Eleventh Hour. Malfunctioning after his regeneration, the sonic screwdriver exploded after exerting too much power.

Sound Advice: Can put up a shelf in a pinch.
