7. Monsters Are Made

Cyberman are manufactured horror. They speak to our fear of losing our identities and giving up control of our bodies and our minds. They are not born they are made. They are a lesson in hubris €“ what do we become if we attempt to cheat death? How far should we go to preserve life? When the cybermen burn themselves to disperse the clouds it is an act of humanity. Machines do not sacrifice themselves. Time Lords had their own methods of avoiding death but this came at a high price. The race lost much of its creativity, becoming pedantic and bureaucratic. Their wars almost tore the universe apart. Some, like the Master, lost their sanity to their addiction to power and the whims of a cruel government. The Master is what the Doctor is always in danger of becoming.
