Deep Breath is a promising start to a new era of Doctor Who. It worked well as a transition episode, paying homage to the past while firmly stepping into the future. Capaldis Doctor is commanding and unpredictable, a fascinating combination of light and dark that does not slight the gray in between. The performer is still finding his footing but thats OK. Like the cyborg searching for the Promised Land we forget that our idealized view of what a thing should be blinds us to the brilliance of what actually is. Deep Breath hints of a journey filled with radiant possibility and a willingness to explore openly and honestly without catering to the past. The episode was well-crafted while Peter Capaldis bold yet nuanced performance assures the Doctor is in capable and devoted hands.
