10. The Doctor Wakes Up
We tell ourselves when its time to leave our dreams. The Doctors agitation in the opening scene of Listen is a wake-up call. He knows that its time to go searching, even if he doesnt know what he is looking for. He could hide from this compulsion of course, but thats not what the Doctor does. He has to know. When he is afraid of something he runs towards it as fast as he can. The Doctor is smart enough not to do this alone. Clara is his moderating voice. One way to avoid panic is to check in with those around us. Opening ourselves up to other points of view means there is more chance to see the whole picture. The Doctors first inclination is to search for an external source of his fear. Clara is the one who leads him out of his head and into his heart.
