5. Honesty Is A Lonely Word
The Doctor never reveals who he really is. But then who of us does? We can never truly know all of another person. We are ultimately mysteries to one another. We change who we are depending on who we are interacting with. Clara is one way with the Doctor and another with Danny. She is exhausting herself trying to play both parts. Yet neither one is a pretence, they exist side-by-side within her. She is equally girlfriend and companion; one does not cancel out the other. Danny is a teacher but as much as he tries to deny it he is also a soldier. The Doctor immediately senses the military aspect that resides within him even as Danny is aware of the same thing about the Doctor. No one is being entirely honest and because of that they are unable to communicate properly. Theres a lot of talking going on in this episode but very little listening.
