Doctor Who Revolution Of The Daleks: 10 Huge Talking Points After The New Year Special

7. Why Is Rose Tyler Mentioned?

It is no secret that Chris Chibnall would love to bring back Rose Tyler. If he is still in situ for the 60th anniversary, that would surely be a likely scenario. But does her mention here indicate we could be seeing Rose even sooner? There is certainly no narrative reason for Jack to mention her. It could of course be nothing more than a little Easter Egg for fans, like Jack’s reference to his immortality.

While at first it doesn’t appear to be of any great significance, there is something curious about Jack saying Rose is trapped in a parallel universe. Yaz in particular takes notice of Rose’s fate. This all could be foreshadowing Yaz’s future following her decision to continue travelling with the Doctor. Could she too become separated from the Doctor in the cruellest and most permanent of ways, stranded in a Doctorless universe?

The heart to heart between Jack and Yaz about their experiences of being parted from the Doctor may well point forward as well as back. Jack, somewhat ironically, given it was once his choice to stay at Torchwood rather than travel with the Tenth Doctor, warns Yaz that she doesn’t get to choose how it all ends. Rose’s mention probably doesn’t mean Billie Piper is going to make a surprise appearance in the next series, but keep an eye out on Yaz’s story. We may have already received our first clue as to where it might be going.
