Doctor Who Series 11: 5 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Arachnids In The UK'

1. Ryan And Graham's Growing Relationship

When the team are heading over the bridge to look at Dr Jade’s spider lab, Graham hands Ryan a letter that was on his doormat when he went home to grieve. Turns out it’s from Ryan’s Dad, a character we knew we weren’t going to see much of. As Graham and Ryan go looking for bigger spiders, Ryan explains the contents of the letter to Graham, not only confiding in him around a subject he’s usually very private about, but brought up the fact that his Dad referred to himself as Ryan’s ‘proper family.’ Ryan doesn’t like this, and even though he doesn’t bluntly say it, he’s pretty much saying that without his Gran, Graham is his ‘proper family’ now.

We knew from episode 1 that Ryan and Graham never really saw eye to eye, mainly with Ryan not accepting that Graham is his new Granddad. This relationship was hinted at again in another episode, but it was brushed off. Now that Ryan’s home and he realises, in the same way that Graham does, that Grace is definitely gone, he finally appreciates that Graham is all he has left. It’s really touching, and a wonderful development for Ryan. I’m hoping this relationship continues to grow throughout this series. I really love these companions.
