Doctor Who Series 12 - 8 Major Rumours You Need To Know

1. Regeneration

Regeneration has become somewhat of a circus of late, with casting announced far ahead of time, televised specials preparing viewers for the impending handover of the TARDIS keys, and vitriolic internet comments sections alternately lambasting or glorifying whomsoever is chosen as the next incarnation of the Time Lord.

Albeit mostly tabloid conjecture, rumours have been swirling around the Whoniverse that series 12 is to be the last of Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as The Doctor. Admittedly, these rumours are corroborated only by unspecified ‘insider sources’, but, as is often the case with Doctor Who, there is no smoke without fire. Rumours of David Tennant’s exit from the show proved accurate, as did murmurs of Christopher Eccleston’s before him.

One persistent rumour currently in circulation suggests that a surprise mid-series regeneration is on the way, with fans pointing to claims made by cast and crew of a “game-changing” episode in the upcoming series and the presence of a new TARDIS console in the trailer, not to mention the BBC’s suspiciously timed uploading of a regeneration compilation to their YouTube channel.

It’s unlikely, as a regeneration episode is dependable ratings gold, but given the initial unexpected trailer drops, the Doctor Who team appear intent on taking viewers by surprise.

That said, Jodie Whittaker’s superlative take on The Doctor is resonating strongly with fans worldwide, and the show is experiencing its highest ratings in several years, both of which would make a shock regeneration an enormous gamble.

But, as the show has proven time and again, anything can happen in Doctor Who.
